Conservatives in the New Forest stand accused of dishonesty over plans to consider new car parking charges.
The Liberal Democrat opposition group on New Forest District Council have exposed secret Tory plans to consider introducing car parking charges in New Forest car parks which, to date, have always been free of charge.
The decision by the ruling Conservatives to appoint a special "Task & Finish" Group to consider the introduction of new charges comes only weeks after the district council elections, which resulted in the Conservatives strengethening their grip on control of the authority.
Councillor Chris Harrison, Leader of the Liberal Democrats on New Forest District Council, is shocked by the development.
He says "At no stage, during the election campaign, did the Conservatives admit to voters that they would consider introducing new car park charges.
It doesn't appear on any of the thousands of glossy leaflets they put out across the forest. It's typically dishonest of the Tory party."
